Artful Splicing
How to create a hybrid in a few easy steps (a formula)

mathematical maximalism

  • maximalism: the opposite of minimalism
  • mathematical: a formula for producing infinite variations on a theme, for maximalizing possible outcomes (to a nearly chaotic degree?)

On a photograph:

  1. Map out areas that resemble one another in texture and/or color;
  2. Draw a simpified schematic of each of these zones;
  3. Superimpose a random texture onto each mapped-out zone; each zone should reference a different (randomly chosen) source;
  4. Combine all the mapped-out, newly texturized areas into a new whole - your unpredictable hybrid
adding together new, randomly chosen, textures:
gold jewelry
brick wall
roses
string
select academic interpretations:
"The juxtaposition of industrial materials (string and brick) with domestic ones (flowers and jewelry) clearly symbolizes the fusion of work and home life in these postmodern times."
"String suggests a connecting element, the thread tying apparently disparate elements together. Utilitarian brick is so bound with the decorative, with roses and gold, suggesting that the aesthetic ideal should incorporate the decorative and the utilitarian in a seamless synthesis"
ad infinitum
ad nauseum
man being the rationalizing species and everything being open to analysis,...so keep 'em speculating
